AUSLAN

What this looks like at our school

At Orchard Park Primary School, we are proud to teach AUSLAN, launched as part of our commitment to delivering a meaningful and inclusive Languages curriculum. AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language) is a visual language used by members of the Australian Deaf community and offers all students a unique opportunity to expand their communication skills and cultural understanding.

Each week, a 15–20 minute video lesson focusing on key AUSLAN topics and themes is delivered across the school. These sessions provide a consistent and engaging learning experience for all students and staff. In addition to this, all staff aim to embed AUSLAN within their weekly planning to immerse the students in the language throughout their regular lessons.

Purpose

This program not only meets the Languages requirement for Victorian schools, but also reflects our commitment to inclusion, equity, and visual literacy development. We are excited to see our school community learn and grow together through this innovative and accessible initiative.
